The Flavour of Freedom
The Flavour of Freedom is a cookbook rooted in solidarity, community care, and the belief that all beings deserve to live free from exploitation. Created by and for the extended whānau of The Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary (Ōtaki), this collection brings together over 100 vegan recipes that have been cooked, shared, refined, and loved in kitchens, collectives, benefit dinners, working bees, and community gatherings.
These are meals for people who know that food is never neutral — that how we eat can reflect how we live, who we stand with, and what kind of world we are building together. The book includes hearty soups and starters, sustaining mains, vibrant salads and sides, and everyday baking and desserts. Many recipes include variations for gluten free, nut free, and soy free diets, because accessibility matters — liberation includes everyone at the table.
The opening chapter, Finding Sanctuary, tells the story of the Black Sheep: a volunteer-run, vegan, non-profit sanctuary providing refuge for animals who have been exploited, abandoned, or displaced. The sanctuary stands as a living alternative to systems of violence and extraction — a reminder that care is a form of resistance, and that mutual aid is something we practice, not just talk about.
By cooking from this book, you are directly supporting the animals who call the sanctuary home — and contributing to a wider movement for collective liberation, climate justice, and a future grounded in compassion and autonomy.
